April 2012

On April 24th we heard from Karen Barefoot, head women’s basketball coach at Old Dominion University. She spoke to us about her past, her vision for ODU women’s basketball and the important lessons she has learned and how she is trying to impress upon her teams those lessons.

March 2012

On March 27th we heard a very interesting speech from Pete Michaud, voice of the Norfolk Admirals. He talked to us about his announcing past, and then about the current state of the Norfolk Admirals, who were in the midst of their 28 game regular season winning streak. He also is the voice of the Norfolk Tides, which will make for an interesting time when both teams are playing at the same time.

February 2012

On February 14th, we heard from "Ducky" Davis, local baseball scout for the Los Angeles Dodgers. He has been involved scouting for various major league teams for many years and his stories were fascinating.

On February 28th, we heard from Kara Wright, 2006 Female Athlete of the Year at that year's Jamboree, from First Colonial HS. She was a 4 time Virginia All Around champion in gymnastics and went on to a stellar career at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. She also told us about her two summer trips to Vietnam, as part of an Atlantic Coast Conference backed group, Coach for College. She interned at ESPN at Disney World in Florida and has just moved back to the area to start a career in the medical equipment sales field.

January 2012

On January 10th, we heard from Lou Tonelson, retired long time principal of Kempsville HS. He talked to us about sports at the high school level and what is involved from a school's administrative perspective.

November/December 2011

On November 8 we heard from several coaches at Virginia Wesleyan College. Dave Macedo, men's basketball; Stephany Dunmyer, women's basketball; Mat Littleton, men's indoor track; Krista Littleton, women's indoor track.

On November 22 we heard from Pete Zell, baseball coach at Salem HS, who told us many stories about youth and HS baseball in the area.

On December 13 we had our annual Christmas luncheon. A good time was had as we had a gift exchange and donated food to the foodbank.

October 2011

On Oct 11th we heard from Rich Radford, sports writer with The Virginian Pilot. Rich covers ODU football and he gave a spirited talk about his sports writing career and covering ODU football. There were many questions from the members about all aspects of the team and the outlook for the upcoming games.

On Oct 25th we heard from one of our newest members, Morgan Lang, who is also the Associate Executive Director of the Hampton Roads Sports Commission. She talked about what the commission is doing and what is coming up for them in the coming months.

September 2011

On the 13th we heard from Danielle Heitman, with the local chapter of the American Cancer Society. She talked to us about the upcoming Coaches vs. Cancer breakfast involving all the local men's and women's collegiate coaches.

On the 27th, we had our annual picnic for members and their families at Red Wing Golf Clubhouse. A good time was had by all with BBQ, games and good fellowship.
